Alfred Thayer Mahan (1840–1914) was an American naval officer, considered one of the most important naval strategists of the nineteenth century. In 1885 he was appointed Lecturer in Naval History and Tactics at the U. S. Naval War College, and served as President of the institution between 1886 and 1889. His series of books examining the role of sea power in history influenced the rapid growth of international navies during the period before World War I. This two-volume study of the Anglo-American war of 1812, first published in 1905, made an important contribution to strategic studies and international relations. Mahan examines the causes of the conflict, arguing that its roots went back to the seventeenth century. Although the naval battles in the war of 1812 were small-scale rather than large fleet actions, Mahan shows that they were nevertheless crucial to the outcome. More

Boston: Massachusetts Historical Society, 1962. Presumed First Edition, First printing. Wraps. Format is approximately 8.5 inches by 11 inches. 16 pages, plus covers. Illustrated front cover. Foreword by Edward P. Hamilton. Illustrations. Cover has some wear and soiling. The year 1962 marked the 150th anniversary of the beginning of the War of 1812. To commemorate the event, the Massachusetts Historical Society produced this Picture Book reproductions of a number of contemporary prints and broadsides, drawn from its own collecitons--which illustrate some aspects of that conflict. the selection confirms what has long been realized, that this was the first of our wars to be well documented with contemporary illustrations. The War of 1812 (June 1812 – February 1815) was a conflict fought between the United States and its allies, and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and its dependent colonies in North America and Native American allies. The conflict began when the United States declared war in June 1812, and ended in a restoration of the pre-war status quo when a peace treaty agreed to earlier was ratified by the United States in February 1815. Its consequences include establishment of a separate Canadian state, an end of hopes for an independent Native American confederation in the North West and paving the way for the western expansion of the US. Washington DC: General Services Administration, The National Archives Trust Fund Board, 1962. Presumed First Edition, First printing. Wraps. Format is approximately 11 inches by 8.5 inches. National Archives Publication 62-10. vii, [5], 56 pages. Illustrations (some in color). The exhibit lists 88 items, not all of which are illustrated in the catalog. Cover has some wear and soiling. For many reasons this exhibit is a source of deep satisfaction to the General Services Administration. It reflects a strong personal interest of President Kennedy--indeed, the exhibit was first suggested by him. It reflects one if the strongest personal interests of his predecessor, Franklin D. Roosevelt. It calls to the attention of the general public the rich cultural resources in our growing network of Presidential libraries, of which the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library was the first. And it presents for the enjoyment of the people of this country some view of the history of their navy that will bring a glow of pleasure to al who see them. Because of the exhibit's wide appeal the Smithsonian Institution's Traveling Exhibit Service will circulate it among other institutions throughout the country after it has been displayed in the National Archives. Franklin Roosevelt was a serious collector of prints, paintings, models, books, and documents relating to the history of the United States Navy. More
