Williamson spent seven years with the Military Police in the British Territorial Army and, as of 2016, resides in Scotland. Williamson has written more than 40 books and other publications. His works have focused on topics ranging from U-boats, military insignia, flying aces, the Waffen-SS, and special forces. Williamson has authored over 20 books on the Waffen-SS and the Wehrmacht. S. P. MacKenzie has that Williamson was one of the British historians in the 1990s who wanted "to reiterate its superb fighting qualities" of various German military units by relying on veterans' narratives. The work provides valuable insight into the experiences of the foot soldier and of human reactions in a war situation. Following his study of air, land and sea heroes of the German forces in World War II, Williamson now gives special attention to those from the ranks of the German infantry. Detailed are the stories of 32 men who, despite performing soldiering feats of excellence and bravery, were never accorded official "ace" status. More
