Washington DC: Service Center for Teachers of History, American Historical Association, 1960. Presumed First Edition, First printing. Wraps. Format is approximately 6 inches by 9 inches. [2], 21, [1] pages. Publication Number 32. The Service Center for Teachers of History is a Service of the American Historical Association. John D. Hicks was a member of the history department at Berkeley for thirty years. He was the Morrison Professor of American history from 1942 until 1957, when he became Morrison Professor Emeritus. After retirement he actively continued his contact with students and his scholarly work. John Hicks was above all a teacher. By 1968, forty-five students had received their doctor's degrees under his direction. He reached a larger audience through the “Hicks histories”--The Federal Union (1937), The American Nation (1941), and A Short History of American Democracy (1943). All three were repeatedly revised; all three drew wide praise. It is impossible to estimate the number of students whose knowledge of American history has been built on the “Hicks histories,” but it is certainly an immense number. John Hick's scholarship centered on the transition of the United States from the agricultural and small-town society still dominant in the Middle West of his youth, to the industrial and urban society increasingly dominant after the First World War. The Populist Revolt (1931), his most important work on this transition, is still a center of “revisionist” controversy forty years later, a sure indication of the enduring quality of the scholarship. His most important work of scholarly synthesis was a volume in the New American Nations Series, Republican Ascendancy, 1921-1933 (1960). More
