First issued in 1902 to teach new recruits about naval procedures and life and offer a reference for active sailors, it has become the "bible" for Navy personnel, providing information about a wide range of Navy topics. The manual includes information for the recruit, subjects which every person on board should know, seamanship, gunnery, physical drills, landing force, and other topics. The 11th edition represented a complete revision which eliminated obsolete material and updated contents to 'suit the needs of the Navy at war." The material, both old and new, contained in this revision, is the conventional lore of the sea and naval experience plus recent developments of importance to our man-o-wars' men. Training courses, training pamphlets and bulletins have provided much of the new text. More
