Lab physicist Louis Rosen proposed building the world's most-advanced nuclear science facility and on June 9, 1972, the full design energy of 800,000,000 electron volts was achieved for the first time. Since then, LANSCE (the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center) has contributed to a range of national security work by Los Alamos scientists and their counterparts from around the world. Milestones from LANSCE's five decades are preserved in the National Security Research Center, the Lab's classified library. Los Alamos National Laboratory is one of the sixteen research and development laboratories of the United States Department of Energy. Best known for its central role in helping develop the first atomic bomb, LANL is one of the world's largest and most advanced scientific institutions. Los Alamos was established in 1943 and served as the main hub for conducting and coordinating nuclear research, bringing together some of the world's most famous scientists. After the war ended in 1945, it became known universally as Los Alamos. Today, Los Alamos conducts multidisciplinary research in fields such as national security, space exploration, nuclear fusion, renewable energy, medicine, nanotechnology, and supercomputing. More
