Inscribed to Congressman (now Senator) Ben Cardin by Major General Bruce Tuxill (Assistant Adjutant General for Air). Format is approximately 9 inches and 12 inches. The Maryland Air National Guard traces its origins to 29 June 1921. On that date the 104th Observation Squadron was federally recognized in Baltimore. It became the first post-World War I National Guard unit to be equipped with its own aircraft, 13 Curtiss JN-4 Jennies, which it flew until 1923. The unit was based at Logan Field in Baltimore. The 104th was initially assigned as division aviation for the 29th Infantry Division. Their annual summer training encampments were at Langley Field, Virginia (until 1931) and Detrick Field, Maryland (1931–41). (Detrick Field, now Fort Detrick, was named for the squadron's flight surgeon, Captain Frederick Detrick.) In addition to Jennies, the 104th flew a variety of other aircraft during the interwar period. Shortly before the U.S. entry into World War II, the unit was transferred to the 59th Observation Group (now the 59th Medical Wing) as part of a larger reorganization of the U.S. Army Air Forces. DJ is price clipped, worn, torn, soiled and chipped and is taped to the boards. In Chemical Warfare, Frederic J. Brown, presents a cogent, innovative framework for understanding the historical forces that have restrained the use of WMD and how they continue to have relevance today. Analyzing both world wars, he argues that the restraints on use were complex and often unpredictable and ranged from the political to the technological. The author offers a detailed examination of American chemical warfare policy as it was shaped by industry and public sentiment, as well as national and military leaders. The organization of the book into three parts reflects the importance of battlefield experiences during the First World War and of international political restraints as they evolved during the interwar years and culminated in "no first use" policies by major powers in World War II. Written at the height of controversy about the U.S. use of chemicals in Vietnam, Chemical Warfare offers a valuable historical perspective, as relevant now in its analysis of chemical and also nuclear policy as it was when first published. From the Foreword signed by Congressman Bill Chappell and Congressman Jack Kemp: "For several years, John Collins, working as an analyst of national security and defense issues for the Congressional Research Service, has built a respected reputation among those familiar with issues of defense and national security. Based largely on the high regard in which Mr. Collins is held professionally, two years ago we jointly requested that he undertake a comprehensive treatment of the military and strategic balance between our nation's forces and those of the Soviet Union. The final product of John Collin's work, as published between these covers, is a balance sheet. The book is a milestone, as well as the first truly comprehensive look at the subject, in which the author not only examines all facets of the situation but attempts to relate those elements to one another."
