Bookplate signed by the author (Sarah Brady). Sarah Jane Brady (née Kemp; February 6, 1942 – April 3, 2015) was a prominent advocate for gun control in the United States. Her husband, James Brady, was press secretary to U.S. president Ronald Reagan and was permanently handicapped as a result of an assassination attempt on Reagan, which occurred on March 30, 1981. James Brady remained as Press Secretary for the remainder of Reagan's administration, primarily in a titular role. Alongside her husband, Sarah Brady became "one of the nation's leading crusaders for gun control". They later became active in the lobbying organization Handgun Control, Inc. that would eventually be renamed the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. She was chairwoman of the Brady Campaign from 2000 until her death in 2015. More

Her father, Norvin, is a World War II veteran and former pastor and Bible teacher. Gracia graduated from Calvary Bible College in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1981, with a bachelor of science degree in Christian education. Gracia was married to Martin Burnham on May 28, 1983, and they graduated together from the New Tribes Mission Training Institute in Durant, Mississippi, in 1984. In March 1986, Martin and Gracia left the states for a mission aviation assignment with New Tribes Mission in Northern Luzon, Philippines. They worked as New Tribes missionaries in the Philippines from 1986 to May 2001. Gracia is author of the book "In the Presence of My Enemies", the story of the year she and Martin spent as hostages of the Abu Sayyaf in the jungles of the Philippines. This is an interesting 'thought piece' that may have been an input to one of the classes Mr. Merrill taught. It is an interesting read both as a 'period piece' when the term 'Negro' was the predominant noun used. It is also fascinating in that many of the points and observations about a half-century ago could have been written uniquely for a modern essay. Mr. Merrill was one of the foremost thought leaders and educational leaders on minority education of the last half of the Twentieth Century. More

Enlivened by frequent quotations, especially from Du Pont's exceptionally detailed letters to his wife, this biography also "accurately mirrors the history of the United States Navy from 1815 to 1865." Merrill follows Du Pont (1803-65) from his service as a midshipman through his duty on distant stations, to participation in the Mexican War, Far Eastern diplomatic activities, work in organizing the Naval Academy and on several important naval boards, and part in the changes from sail to steam and in the Civil War. - Amazon. While still a Merchant Marine Cadet, Lieutenant Merrill was on board the Samuel Gompers when she was torpedoed in the South Pacific in 1943. Subsequently graduating from the U. S. Merchant Marine Academy in 1944, he received his Third Mate’s papers and an Ensign’s commission in the U. S. Naval Reserve. From 1944 to 1946, he served on board the U.S.S. Chincoteague (AVP-24) and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant (j.g.). Merrill graduated from Pomona College in 1947, and received his M.A. degree in history at the Claremont and a Doctor of Philosophy, University of California, Los Angeles, in 1954. He was the recipient of the Harry E. Pratt Memorial award; he was a John and Dora Haynes grantee, 1958; he was a Guggenheim research fellow, 1958-1959; and he was a Mershon National Security fellow, 1961-1962. More
